Nepalese Night: A Great Success!

Montreal, Saturday, February 23, 2013 – Nepalese Night, a fundraising cultural program was organized at the Scalabrini Centre, Montreal, Canada on February 23, 2013. More than 150 people gathered from various communities to celebrate Nepalese Night. The event was organized to help constructing additional classrooms and provide basics learning materials to the student of Peace child orphanage and Holy Angel English School in Pokhara, Nepal.

Delivering a welcome speech, His Excellency Dr. Bhoj Raj Ghimire highlighted the current situation of Nepal and told that he was very happy to see both Nepalese and Canadian team working together to help Nepalese orphanages in need. Member of Federal Parliament Madam Maria Mourani expressed her happiness that the people from her local area are involved to help Nepalese orphanage and she reiterated that she is always by the side if there is anything she could assist with in her welcome speech. “Our small contribution today will put some smiles on these orphanages’ face forever.” Muga Rajbhandari, ANQ President welcomed participants and added that the ANQ had also organized a fund raising program with Barthelemy School to help school children in Kabhre, Nepal and recently participated in a fund raising program with Dix Mille Village to promote Nepali goods and help in education, job creation and sustainable development through fair trade in Nepal and with Priory school in Montreal to purchase new laptop computers for their students. “A bridge to Nepal has just been created and it is just a beginning, we need to do a lot.” Camilla Martin from Pasto Social Ahunstic said during her welcome speech. 

A short introduction about Nepal was presented by Prativa Baral. Martin Paquin who visited orphanage in Pokhara, Nepal shared her experience including photograph of those children and expressed her gratitude to all participants and organizers who are being involved to make the project successful and committed to help orphanage in Pokhara during her presentation. 

Nepali traditional dances and songs performed by ANQ cultural team was one of the main attractions of the event. Silent Auction winners were announced at the end of the program. Homemade Nepalese appetizers were served at the beginning of the program. 

The event was jointly organised by Maria Mourani, Federal Member of Parliament, Martine Paquin, citizen of Ahuntsic who initiated the project, Scalabrini Centre, Association of Nepalese in Quebec (ANQ) and Pasto social Ahuntsic. The program was hosted by Miguel Arevelo, Scalabrini Center.
