Nepali movie show - JHOLA

Nepali movie Jhola show

"Why is it that only a woman has to sacrifice her life when a man dies, why can't he do the same ... And why is it acceptable for a man to marry for the second time" that was really a painful expression one can hear while watching the 2014 best foreign language Oscar submission Nepali movie “JHOLA”. Although the Sati Pratha (Widow burning system) was abolished decades ago, JHOLA is still relevant to today's Nepal where, unfortunately, cases of sexual harassment, violence against women, trafficking remain all too common.

"Thank God, she is pretty smart and survived! And kudos to Prime Minister Chandra Samsher for abolishing the "Sati Pratha" (widow burning system) in Nepal" - one of the participants commented after the movie show.

Association of Nepalese in Quebec (ANQ) and NRN-Canada jointly organized the movie show on January 4, 2015 at Cinema du Parc to help women’s health in Nepal. The show was very successful despite the ice rain and bad weather in Montreal.

ANQ would like to thank its members, friends and family for making their time and contributing for the cause. Special thanks to Radha Basnyat and Bhanuji for bringing the movie from Ottawa driving more than 4 hours on the slippery road and networking to collect funds for the cause.
