Preserving Our Language, Strengthening Our Roots: Nepali Bhasa Class Begins for the First Time in Quebec
July 21, 2025
We are proud to announce a historic step for the Nepali community in Quebec, the launch of the Nepali Bhasa (Language) Class, now officially underway for the first time.
Organized under the initiative of the Association of Nepalese in Quebec (ANQ), this weekly language class aims to connect second-generation Nepalese children and interested individuals with the beauty, depth, and richness of the Nepali language and culture. Held in an engaging and supportive classroom environment, the program has already begun to draw strong interest from families across the region.
The need for a language class became evident through conversations with parents who wanted their children to understand and speak their mother tongue. Language is not just a means of communication; it is a mixture of identity, culture, and history. As children of Nepali origin grow up in a multicultural society like Canada, maintaining a connection to their heritage becomes more important than ever.
In the first few weeks, students have started learning the Nepali alphabet (Devanagari script), basic words and sentences, cultural expressions, and even Nepali rhymes and songs. Classes are taught by dedicated volunteer, Mr. Prajjol Raj Puri, who is passionate about language education and cultural preservation.
What makes this class unique is its community-centered approach. Parents are involved, children are excited, and the broader community is supportive. It is not only a learning experience, it’s a cultural gathering, where language becomes a bridge between generations.
We believe this effort will sow the seeds for a stronger, more connected community that celebrates its roots while embracing life in Canada. We invite more families to join us on this journey of language, learning, and identity.
Let’s raise a generation that can say with pride: “हामी नेपाली हौँ – हामी नेपाली बोल्छौं।”
